Why do you serve in Field Guides? Field Guides focuses on things that I'm passionate about. Building deep relationships, focusing on Spiritual growth and doing fun stuff in nature. It's amazing how well those things fit together and feed each other. Young people are so often trying to answer the question, "Who am I?" and "Where do I belong?", whether they know it or not. It's such a privilege to create a safe, accepting environment where a young man can find out who God created him to be.
What's an attribute of God that's especially apparent in Nature? I am always reminded of the vastness of God. God is just so big, and not just in size. No matter how well I know an area, or river, or piece of property, there is always some new surprise or something new to learn. God is the same way: part known and part mystery waiting to be discovered.
What's a favorite book of yours? The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien. When I saw that they were releasing the movies, I decided I wanted to read the books first. I loved the struggle between light and darkness and how no one character could overcome evil alone. It took the Fellowship and many others playing their part, rising to the occasion, deciding to act and sacrifice for the goal to be met. Every character was different and their unique backgrounds, abilities and talents were important. The Kingdom of God is like that.
What truth would you like every young man need to know? That they are loved and that they are good - not for what they do or achieve, but for who they are. Personally, I'm still trying to learn and accept these things about myself. Our culture loves the successful and those who "earn" it. God's love for us is not results based... it just is.
What skill would you love to master? Fly Fishing. Easy question. From reading the water and choosing the right fly to the perfect cast, drift, hookset and fight... amazing. I'll get there one day!

Why do you serve in Field Guides? The Field Guides' format is how I was raised. My formative experiences were all centered around a mentor-based adventure into the outdoors where I learned more about my spiritual walk as well as myself. I've always tried to recreate those experiences with our kids.
Where is your favorite outdoor spot? There is a specific fallen tree overlooking a gorge on a ranch outside of Meridian, TX. My grandpa would take me hiking on this ranch weekly and we'd always stop and rest sitting on this dead tree. The scenic outlook is a place we called "the pew". He'd always tell me about God and his love for me there.
What life skill do you want every young man to learn? The ability to embrace hardship is a life skill every young man needs. Our annual Colorado trip is perfect for facilitating that lesson. Pushing through adversity, physically and mentally, is a great skill to learn for adulthood, especially if you can learn to utilize the men you surround yourself with for support and to lean into God for the inner strength you won't fully understand is there until you desperately need it.
If you could lead an outing anywhere in the world, where would it be? To choose one location would be impossible, so I'll give you two! I'd love to run a fly fishing outing in Patagonia. Or, lead a red stag hunt in New Zealand. Hearing stags roar in those rolling hills has always been a bucket list trip.
Who is one of your role models? My grandpa, GrandBob, has always been the biggest influence on my life. He's been the steady character that's always provided stability and guidance for me. He's a Godly man that always called me up to be more. I've modeled so many aspects of my life around his and it has never steered me wrong. He developed a teaching style with me that guides how I raise my son now.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? I really like getting to know both the young men and the other volunteers, and I love sharing in Christ-centered wilderness experiences with them.
Where is your most sentimental outdoor spot? Going up to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (in Minnesota) in the summers with my wife. We do a combination of canoeing and portaging to get to a campsite and then spend the days fishing and exploring crystal-clear lakes, all in 70-degree weather.
What's a favorite outdoor memory? For outdoors, my favorite memory is the first camping trip I took with my wife. For hunting, it would have to be the first deer I downed. For fishing, it is one of my first fishing trips when I was little; my godfather took me trout fishing on the White River in Arkansas.
What outdoor skill are you currently developing? I really enjoy woodworking. I have built projects ranging in complexity from baby toys to a computer armoire. Each project has proven to have its own challenges in design and execution, and no project is ever finished without hiccups.
Do you have any heroes? My dad has set a good example as a godly husband and father, and my godfather (also a godly husband and father) instilled a knowledge and love for fishing from a young age.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? I serve Field Guides by using my outdoor experience to teach young men skills that they can carry through life with them. I enjoy building relationships and sharing experiences to build and encourage our guys.
Where is/was your favorite (or most sentimental) outdoor spot? My favorite place outdoors is in the mountains of Colorado. I have spent many hours hiking, fishing, and hunting in the San Juan Mountains with Field Guides' young men and guides. Some of my most meaningful relationships have been built and strengthened in that mountain range.
What’s your favorite outdoor or campfire snack/meal? My favorite campfire snack is an HEB bakery tortilla crisped up on the fire. If there’s a campfire, you can guarantee I’m roasting something!
What piece of advice would you like to give every young/new sportsman? When you try a new outdoor skill, you won't be great at it right away. True skill takes time, practice and dedication. Don't give up, you'll be busting clays and catching trout on a fly in no time!
What’s a skill learned afield that has massively aided your daily life? A practice that I took on very early in life was to always carry a pocket knife. A true outdoorsman knows that a knife is one of the most useful tools you can carry. Sharpening a knife well is an invaluable skill that has taken years for me to develop.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? There are many reasons I'm honored to serve here. A big one is the opportunity to shape and mold the next generation of young men into God fearing outdoorsmen with the skills to tackle the challenges of everyday life.
What truth does God often remind you of while in nature? The more time I spend in the outdoors the more I see the awe of God and His character. Understanding we serve a God who makes all things, from the bugs crawling on the ground to the tall mountains in Colorado and much more.
If you had a superpower that could only be used for good, what would it be? I want to be able to fly!
What's a book, movie, or series that's been particularly impactful to you? "The Chosen." It’s a series of biblical accounts in action. To see the different Bible stories played out gives real life perspective and understanding of how things may have really been in the time they occurred.
What principle do you want every young man to learn through Field guides? My hope is that every young man who goes through Field Guides would walk away with the knowledge of who we are in Christ and how to be a conduit of God's resource He gives us to spread the good news!

Why do you serve in Field Guides? Field Guides provides me the opportunity to share skills and experiences that I have with young men who are interested in learning outdoor skills.
What attribute of God is apparent to you while in nature? Nature most often shows me the infinite creativity of God. I see His majesty and His glory revealed in his creation.
What's your favorite outdoor meal? Breakfast! Cooking breakfast in a cast iron skillet on a wood fire brings back fond memories of camping trips with a couple of friends during high school.
What piece of advice would you like to give every young sportsman? Cherish every opportunity you have to get into the field. Put your phone in your pocket and let your senses absorb the glory that God has on display in the field. Listen to the birds, examine the intricate design of flowers and trees. Let creation speak to you about the Creator.
What piece of advice would you give every new Christ follower? Get ready for a lifetime of adventure in following Jesus. His ways and His will for your life may not always be easy, but walking with Him in obedience over the long haul is an adventure not to be missed. And in the end, it yield eternal life with Him!

Why do you serve in Field Guides? My wife and I share a passion for serving youth and feel genuinely called to minister to young people. Currently, we teach High School Sunday School at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church, where we've experienced firsthand the joy of sharing Christ's love with teenagers. What draws me specifically to HOT Field Guides is the unique opportunity it provides to reach young men through outdoor experiences. I believe God moves powerfully through this ministry by combining His Word with practical life lessons learned in nature. There's something special about how the outdoors can open hearts and minds to spiritual truths while building character and confidence. I want to help fill the need for positive male mentorship in our community, using the outdoors as a backdrop for discipleship and spiritual growth.
Is there a bible verse that’s been especially impactful to you? Psalm 19:1 has been especially impactful to me: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands". This verse resonates deeply because it reminds me that God's creation is a constant testimony to His greatness and character. When I'm outdoors - whether hiking, fishing, or simply observing His creation - I'm continually amazed by the intricate details and breathtaking beauty that surrounds us. If God's creation is this magnificent and complex, how much more wonderful must our Creator be?
What outdoor skill are you uniquely gifted at? Over the past 25 years, I've been blessed to develop skills in fly fishing, both in freshwater and saltwater environments. What started as a hobby has grown into a deep passion that includes tying my own flies and experiencing the unique connection between angler and fish that a fly rod provides. I've found that fly fishing isn't about being special or having natural talent - it's something anyone can learn with patience and practice. What I particularly enjoy is introducing people to fly fishing who have never tried it before. There's something rewarding about watching someone experience that first successful cast or feel that initial tug on the line. I believe this skill could be valuable in ministry because fly fishing teaches patience, observation, and perseverance - qualities that translate well into our spiritual lives.
What's your favorite thing to roast on a campfire? My favorite campfire treat has to be blackberry cobbler made in a Dutch oven. Matt Wible has prepared this incredible dessert for the Field Guides on several occasions, and I can honestly say it's one of the most delicious things I've ever tasted.
What life skill or principle do you want every young man to learn through Field Guides? I want every young man who participates in Field Guides to be impacted by Christ's love that it transforms how they view others. My hope is that they would move beyond self-centered thinking and develop a genuine desire to love their neighbors and serve others. In a world that often promotes looking out for yourself first, I believe one of the most powerful life skills we can teach is selflessness - putting others' needs before our own and finding joy in serving. When young men truly grasp how much Christ loves them, it naturally overflows into love for others. I want them to leave our outings not just with outdoor skills or biblical knowledge, but with hearts that are eager to make a difference in their communities, families, and friendships. If they can learn to think of others before themselves, they'll be equipped to lead with humility and compassion throughout their lives, which is exactly the kind of men our world needs.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? As older men, I have learned that we are called to take opportunity and time to invest into the next generation coming up. We have been given an opportunity to share experiences, wisdom, skills, and knowledge to young men as they begin to navigate life and life’s challenges.
What truth or lesson does God often remind you of when in nature? Nature has a great way of demonstrating both consistency and change. God is constant. The statement "God is constant" means that God's nature, character and promises are unchanging and reliable, regardless of the ever-changing circumstances of the world, like in nature. This idea is rooted in the Bible and in our Christian beliefs, emphasizing that God's love, grace, and faithfulness endure.
If you could lead a Field Guides outing anywhere in the world where and what would the outing be? Obviously fishing in Alaska! (Rob has owned and operated fishing lodges in Alaska for over 20yrs.)
What life skill or principle do you want every young man to learn through Field Guides? Independence and dependency. We need to teach young me to be independent thinkers and to not follow the crowd. Be educated on subjects like the Bible, thoughtful in their conversations and intentional in their actions. We also need young men to be dependent on God. They don’t need the approval of their peers, social medial or the world to meet their needs. What they need is personal relationship the Almighty Creator.
What need do you want to help fill through this organization? I'm honored to serve in any capacity. Isaiah 6:8 says, "Here am I, send me."

Why do you serve in Field Guides? Few things have had a greater impact on my life than Christian, male role-models. God has richly blessed me with men that I look up to, that guide me and call me to higher – many of those men are fellow volunteers in Field Guides! It’s a privilege to try to follow their example and humbly lead young men toward biblical manhood.
What truth or lesson does God often remind you of when in nature? When I’m in the green & dew-covered places of the world, I find it much easier to still the busyness in my mind and be reminded by God’s spirit that He is all-knowing, all-loving, all-powerful, and that I am none of those things. I’m reminded that God is in control no matter how dire a circumstance may seem, so I can surrender my worries to Him and rest knowing that I'm taken care of.
If you could lead a Field Guides outing anywhere in the world where and what would the outing be? Going after “bull” Redfish on the Texas coast! Just imagine: the sun rises over the bay as the reeds sway in the salty breeze, and then a 10-30lb redfish takes off across the flat for the fight of a lifetime! We’ll make it happen soon.
What’s a meal you could win a Blue Ribbon with? I make whole-muscle jerky that will knock your socks clean off. Don’t grab a piece of my wild turkey jerky unless you want to be disappointed in all future jerky. It’s good. It’s very good… It may be too good.
What piece of advice would you like to give every young sportsman? Just get out there and keep an open mind. So many people get frustrated and give up because they aren’t having “success” right off the bat. Many of my best outdoor memories come through misadventures and unexpected encounters! So, get out there, learn as you go, and enjoy whatever the day holds; you’ll often be surprised!

Why do you serve in Field Guides? The main reason that I serve in Field Guides is for the opportunity to give back to young men who are trying to navigate through life. God has used Field Guides to help bring me back into relationship with Him and I love the opportunity to help and serve in any way.
Where is/was your favorite (or most sentimental) outdoor spot? Colorado has a special place in my heart. Canejos Lake Fork Ranch is holy ground to me where God met me in the summer of 2019 and called me back into relationship with Him. Love this place.
Where have you felt closest to God in nature? There is a river above the waterfall in Colorado where I feel God’s presence as I sit quietly with my feet in the river.
If you could lead a Field Guides outing anywhere in the world where and what would the outing be? I would love to lead a Field Guides outing in Alaska. The sheer beauty of the wilderness combined with the wildlife and fishing would be an incredible backdrop to meet with God.
What piece of advice would you like to give every young/new sportsman? You do not need to be a skilled outdoorsmen who grew up hunting and fishing. I didn’t know anything as a guy from Southern California. Just come and be willing to serve and learn.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? God used hunting/fishing trips and time in the outdoors to do a deep work in my heart and reconnect me to a meaningful relationship with my own father after my parents divorced when I was 7 years old. Getting time in the woods to quiet your soul, learn what it means to be a man, and engage with nature set the stage for me to learn from my Dad and many "Uncles" along the way that taught me new skills. Whether it was learning how to field dress an animal or the way that Christian men process their feelings and take things to the Lord, God used time in the outdoors to shape me into the man I am today and do a great deal of healing in my heart. Field Guides is one of the things I'm most passionate about; seeing young men develop into the fullness of who God has called them to be and doing so in similar contexts where God met me so many times during various seasons of life. It is a great privilege to be part of Field Guides and invest in the next generation learning not only how to be sportsmen but Godly young men with Christ-like character. I would not be the man I am today without all the "uncles" that invested in me and taught me what it means to be a man who navigates the stormy seas of life with a robust faith.
Who has been a role model in your life? One of the most meaningful role models in my life was a family-friend named David Morgan. David was a pastor of a cowboy church and part of a fourth-generation hunting lease down in Llano, TX and he taught me so many things that my own father could not. David was a patient man who was thoughtful and reflective; he taught me how to embrace the outdoors and prepare to engage with nature. From quartering a deer to the importance of packing propane heaters for the deer blind in December, David showed me how to be a good steward and host others well when engaging in new terrain. He blazed a trail that made it easier for me to follow in his footsteps and ask endless questions as an aspiring hunter seeking to learn as much as I could. David taught me how to be an outdoorsman and find little ways to enjoy every aspect of hunting trips.
What outdoor skill are you uniquely gifted at? One of the things I love about Field Guides is how each of us leans on each other and brings unique skills to the table. As much as I love hunting and fishing, I also enjoy cooking a delicious meal that honors the animal and feeds your loved ones. I love outdoor/live fire cooking and would say it's one of the unique things I bring to Field Guides. From 120+ lb. crawfish boils to smoking 10+ pork butts on a huge offset smoker, I love helping feed the hunting party. Even when we can't control the outcomes of the hunt, we always eat good on a Field Guides trip!
What is a book, movie, or series that's been particularly impactful to you? Beyond the Bible, the book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero reinforced to me that you cannot be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. The book is written by a pastor and overlays the truths of Christian spirituality with a contemporary understanding of emotional health, showing how ignoring our emotional life creates a shallow, fragile faith. Following Jesus means becoming emotionally honest (with ourselves, with God, and with others), healing from the past, and learning to love well.
What life skill or principle do you want every young man to learn through Field Guides? Learn how to be part of the beautiful creation that God made in nature! Learn your place in creation and how to drink deeply as we engage with the rugged magnificence of nature. In learning to say "yes" and engage deeply with nature, it requires disconnecting and saying "no" to many distractions (social media, job/school concerns, the latest trends or sports score, etc.) so we can then ground ourselves in what is most important. I consistently find that learning to quiet my soul before God in the outdoors leaves me refreshed and energized to engage more deeply with life when I return home having spent time in the woods. Nature is a gift from God that older men taught me to appreciate and through Field Guides I hope to do the same.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? As an empty nester father of two sons, and a follower of Jesus, volunteering with Field Guides was a natural fit for me. Having created countless outdoor memories, first with my father, then my two sons, Field Guides provides an extension of my passion for spending time in God's beautiful creation. I believe that the Field Guide outings and trips provide a unique opportunity to share God's love with the boys and young men that participate in our ministry.
What has been an especially impactful Bible verse in your life? "When I consider your heavens, the works of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? Psalms 8:3-4
What skill are you particularly gifted in? Although not particularly unique among the other Field Guide volunteers, I have extensive experience hunting white tail deer. Skills such as still hunting, stalking, scouting, tracking and marksmanship have been acquired and developed over a lifetime of hunting. To be able to help a young man harvest his first deer has been just one of the rewards of my involvement in Field Guides.
Above all else, what do you hope men to take away from their time with Field Guides? I want every young man who participates in Field Guides to understand the depth and encompassing love that our Heavenly Father has for each of them. This ministry has given me an opportunity to hopefully be a reflection of that love.

Why do you serve in Field Guides? I want to be a part of brining Godly, manly men back into the earth. I want to be the Lord’s hands and feet in fostering generations after me. I think a pivotal thing for any believer is spending time in and growing an appreciation for the outdoors and in God's creation. I see the Lord pushing men to be better and increasing the Lord's kingdom. I see lights and opportunities for our team to lead and be led.
What truth or lesson does God often remind you of while in nature? When I am in Gods creation, I am constantly reminded to take deep breaths and that the Lord has a plan and He is in control. It reduces my anxieties and calms my soul.
If you could be an expert in anything, what would it be? If I could instantly become an expert at anything, I think I would immediately be come an expert homesteader. One of my goals is to be self sufficient and cultivate the Lords creation.
What advice would you give every young sportsman? Never lose the wonder, and always learn from your mistakes.
What truth do you hope do you want young men to take away from their time with Field Guides? I would love for each young man that comes through Field guides to learn that they are valuable and capable of amazing things. They are anointed sons of the KING OF KINGS!

Why do you serve in Field Guides? It combines my favorite things, and my giftings. I love the outdoors and the lessons it teaches. I love to influence and mentor young people. My gifts are teaching and serving so it all coalesces in this volunteer effort.
Where is your favorite place in the outdoors? My deer blind. It is secluded, quiet, has a beautiful hill country view and it is easy to commune with the Lord when there. I love the solitude and peace, it slows me down.
Is there an outdoor skill you are uniquely gifted at? Preparedness. I have the ability to assess any situation, current or upcoming, figure out not only what I need or need to do, but also what I may need or need to do once I am in the situation. I rarely find myself in need of something in the wilderness that I do not have with me, or that I am not capable of building, making or acquiring.
What piece of advice would you like to give every new Christian? Be diligent, but patient. The Christian life is a long walk. It twists and turns and holds many surprises. Be diligent in that you keep walking the pat, but be patient as God will reveal his way and will to you in different ways, at different times, for different reasons and as you are ready to handle the next dose of truth and reality.
