There are so many benefits to sitting under someone's instruction and learning from their wisdom and experience! Part of the mission of Field Guides is creating a place for men to teach outdoor skills to the next generation of young men.
On Saturday, February 4 and 11, any young man from the age of 6 to 18 years old is invited to come to the first ever Field Guides Master Class. The topic of this ground breaking event is "Fire Building" and we will be instructed by Field Guides Board Member, Speedy Wible. These classes will be very "hands on" as each young man will not only be learning the steps, techniques and areas of caution in fire building but they will be applying what they learn and building their own fires! On both dates we will meet up at 1:00 and be done at 5:00. Material covered will be different on both dates, so please attend both if you can. Participants are asked to bring a small camp hatchet if they have one and $5 to help cover snacks, drinks and supplies. This is sure to be an insightful and fun day of instruction and practice. Please reply to this email if you want more info and/or would like to sign up for our first "Master Class". Get signed up today, invite a friend or two, or forward on to someone you think might want to attend. Last weekend was the Doe Demo Outing. This trip is usually marked by many firsts- some from this year were first time to shoot a rifle, first deer, first hog and even first time hunting. What a wonderful weekend it was! Ten youth hunters, three dads and five guides spent the weekend at the shooting range, in the deer blind and around the camp fire. It's hard to beat a weekend like that! Stephen dropped a 195 pound hog (his first) from 120 yards. Landry made a skilled shot on his first deer. Jordan added to his growing list of Doe Demo successes with another nice doe. Congrats to the successful hunters! All of the participants were able to learn/help in cleaning the animals. Everyone received shooting instruction and passed their shooting tests. Did I mention that a weekend like this is hard to beat!? Our camp fire conversations centered on our "citizenship". With so much focus on the current Presidential campaigns and election, it is so easy to get distracted on who you like or dislike...its so easy to feel down about the future of our country...BUT we have to remember that we, as Believers in Jesus Christ, are citizens of Heaven. Philippians 3:20 says, "But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior." No matter what happens in November our futures are secure and we are taken care of because Jesus is our King. We are making a small adjustment on the November Catfish and Crappie Outing. This trip will still take place on the Navasota River and still be $40 per participant- only change will be the weekend. Adjust your calendars for November 18-20 and get signed up soon.
October Deer Hunt The Field Guides October Deer Hunt, aka. the Doe Demo Outing, as it has become known as, is at hand! It's time to sign-up for this great outing. Dates are October 14-16. As always for this trip, location is Stillwater Refuge in Grapeland, TX. Cost is $60 per participant and an additional $35 charge will be added (payable to Stillwater Refuge) in the event that you harvest a deer. Send an email to [email protected] to get signed up and we'll send you some more details and paper work. Excited about being in the woods and the deer blind again! Jr. Guides Day Trip Announcement Jr. Guides is for young men from 6 years old to 11 years old. The guys learn practical outdoor skills from our guides and volunteers on day trips rather than weekend trips. This time, we are going to have a day of exploration in the woods of Central Texas. We will discuss finding shelter, reading maps and being aware of whats going on around you. I'm sure other topics will be discussed too, but those are where we will start. Saturday, October 22 is the Day Trip. Send an email to [email protected] to get signed up and we'll send you some more details and paper work. Cost is $20 per participant. Dove Outing Review A few weekends back we help our annual Local Dove Outing. A HUGE "thank you" to Croft Automation for letting us utilize their land and cabin for the weekend. The hunting was decent as we got close to 40 birds on the weekend. Congrats to Ty for getting his first ever dove! Better than the hunting was the time that we got to spend reconnecting with each other over good food and in the field. Building relationships with young men is what Field Guides Outings are all about, this one was a textbook success. Check out the pics below. Field Guides will be hosting a Jr Guides fishing trip on Saturday, February 20, 2016. Clash here for complete info.
